DECEMBER
December at a glance: **REMINDER: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6 IS A PA DAY. There will be no school for students on that day.*
French: In French, we are continuing to build our vocabulary related to descriptive language, with a focus on family, and adjectives to describe them, and everyday activities. We will be working on using the appropriate forms of adjectives in our writing to write an effective description as well as in comparisons, and we will be learning the verb FAIRE (to do/make). In reading, we will continue to develop reading strategies to help identify the meanings of unfamiliar words and look at the characteristics of graphic texts. We will apply what we learn about info-graphics to design our own about holiday celebrations from around the world.
Math: We are continuing with our Measurement unit, focusing on measurement relationships, perimeter and area. We are also learning to use the GRASS strategy for solving word problems.
Social Studies:
Grade 4: We will be looking at the characteristics of the physical regions of the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands
Grade 5: We will be studying the Charter of Rights, citizenship, and the difference between rights and responsibilities
Science:
Grade 4: Rocks and Minerals
Grade 5: Changes in Properties of Matter
English:
In English, we will be looking at more descriptive writing and continue looking at the characteristics of informational/graphic forms of texts.
We will continue to look at reading strategies and how they help us with unfamiliar meanings as well as the functions of the different parts of speech.

We had a bit of an unexpected day at school today. Please see your child's backpack for a letter sent home by the school explaining what happened in full detail. As a result, our day did not go as planned and the kids have no homework other than preparing their songs for the concert tomorrow which will take place in the gym at 1:00 pm. We hope to see you all there.
Tuesday, December 17:
Today, we spent some time reviewing French but the rest of the day was a lot of rehearsal and preparation for the concert this afternoon. No homework again, as a result of the changes in the regular schedule.
Wednesday, December 18:
They have some new lyrics to learn for our assembly of Friday for a special version of Children of the Light. I have posted the video with the original lyrics and tune above under Music.
Here is a copy of their new lyrics:
Mrs. Havill, we wish you all the best
You’re retiring, and now you get to rest
You have worked hard, for so many years
You’ve touched the hearts of everyone you’ve taught throughout the years
Come gather round and share, and show how much we care
Mrs. Havill, you’re alright
As you leave us here today, we will miss you very much
You’ve taught many kids, from big to little ones.
(chorus)
You will stay here in our hearts, ‘cause you’ve done so much for us
And we love you very much
You will always have a home with us here at Emily Carr
This is not goodbye, but see you sometime soon
Mrs. Havill, we wish you all the best
You’re retiring, and now you get to rest
You have worked hard, for so many years
You’ve touched the hearts of everyone you’ve taught throughout the years
(repeat chorus 1 more time)
You’ve touched the hearts of everyone you’ve taught throughout the years
HAPPY RETIREMENT!!
